Season 9 of the American version of The Masked Singer premiered on February 15, 2023, and concluded on May 17, 2023.

Production

In late December 2022, a ninth season was officially confirmed via the official FOX YouTube channel.[1] On January 11, 2023, the season was officially announced and it was revealed that the season would premiere on February 15, 2023, along with the names of the first four costumes.[2] Five additional costume names were revealed during a football game aired on January 15.[3][4]

Themed nights, introduced in the previous season, returned.[2] The themed nights in the season included "Opening Night", "ABBA Night", "New York Night", "DC Superhero Night", "Sesame Street Night", "Country Night", "80s Night", "Movie Night", and "The Masked Singer in Space Night".[5][6][7]

A new twist, titled the 'Ding Dong Keep it On Bell', debuted in the season. The bell allowed panelists to save a singer from elimination.[8][5]

French Hen costume

French Hen, as seen in the promotional poster

Prior to the airing of the season, promotional material including a press release[2] and poster[9] included a mask called French Hen. It is unknown what has happened to this particular costume and the use of it, although it has been revealed that the celebrity participant of Night Owl was a last-minute addition to the season after a celebrity dropped out,[10][11] due to reportedly testing positive for COVID-19.[12] Nothing has officially been confirmed, though it is speculated that the celebrity who dropped out would have been French Hen.

The French Hen costume would eventually be reused for the basis of Royal Hen in Season 10.
