Clues[]

Week Clue
1 "At the starting line of my career, I was surrounded by other hungry newcomers. It felt like everyone around me was fighting tooth and nail for the dream. And I watched as many of those stars burned too brightly too quickly and then fizzled out. I'm 'the Turtle', because I've always taken this step by step. Slow and steady wins the race. But now, I feel like I'm ready to break out of my shell. After years of preparation, I would love to make a big splash. So I don't want anyone to cross that finish line before me."
"Being here feels like such an opportunity to break out of my shell. People have always expected me to act a certain way. That really tests me. Well, I want to rebel from all that. You can punish me all you like for being myself. But if I want to sing a love song, I'm going to sing a love song."
2 "Man, I'm having a shell of a good time on this show being whoever I want. I would never have gotten here without the people who supported my dream, like my favorite teacher from high school, Miss S."
(Turtle's 9th Grade Teacher): "Turtle was in my 9th grade bio class. I'm not surprised he's on the show because I remember he always came into my class singing. He's the most driven student I ever had. Last year, I ran into him, and he recognized me. I was so proud to see everything he had achieved, but he was still like that same sweet, humble kid. Turtle, good luck on the show. I hope you have the time of your life. Hey, can I move my bookshelf now?"
9 "Just like my costume, I'm hard core about being the best at everything I do. I realized that to win, I had to become one with 'the Turtle', like a method actor. First, I run a 10K before each show, wearing a 40-pound vest to get used to the heaviness of my shell. That's a quarter of my body weight. Next, I know that to win this, you need more than a good voice, so I added tons of choreo, even though I'm not a dancer. Entering the Super 9, it's really hitting how badly I want to win that golden mask trophy. And now, America, I guess it won't hurt to give everybody a fantastic confession. This is not another teeny clue."
10 Astronaut: "In a lot of ways, this face-off was inevitable because Turtle and I are almost like mirror images of each other in this competition."
Turtle: "The panel have been making similar, sometimes the same guesses for who Astro and I under these masks."
Astronaut: "We've kept the ladies swooning with our heartbreaking ballads and emotional anthems of love."
Turtle: "And now we get to see which one of us can stand out in this heartthrob throwdown. The song I'm doing tonight is all about devastating heartbreak. And I've had my fair share. And if I can channel my past pain into this song, that should be enough to send Astronaut on an away mission."
Astronaut: "In real life, I'm a shy guy. And despite the fact that I'm in a top secret space suit on this show, I feel like I'm showing more of my heart than I ever have. And that's how I'm going to give this turtle a shellacking."
Both: "May the best man win."
12 "When I started this competition, I had no idea how much this game would change me. My whole career, I've been riddled with insecurities about not being good enough. And despite my strategizing, I always seem to put myself in last place. But on this stage, in this mask, I can feel my confidence growing in the right direction. I know I have strong competitors, so I'm pushing myself to be one step ahead. Tonight, it's not just about vocals. I'm showing I can be a full package entertainer, dance moves and all. Checkmate."
13 "Let me tell you, being 'the Turtle' makes me feel like a superhero. Underneath this shell, I'm just an everyday guy with a ton of insecurities. And being in this costume has given me some much needed time to work on myself to become stronger. And with this new-found strength comes a great sense of duty. I don't want to let this incredible opportunity be just about competing and winning. I want to pay it forward the best way Shell Boy knows how. Look, we've all taken hard hits in life. We all have demons to battle. And I know it may sound corny, but I believe music can help you through the darkest of times and bring healing. So tonight, I have high hopes you'll love this song. It's my message to America. Shell Boy's got your back."
14 "Making it to the semifinals feels unreal. I've started to believe in myself in a way I never have before. As an artist, I was so pigeonholed. I never felt confident about stepping outside my wheelhouse. But one panelist has changed that all, someone I've looked up to for years, whose sweet falsetto has inspired my own, and whose praise week after week has meant the world to me. Robin, you don't know how hard I've been geeking out under this mask. For my first car, I even bought a special CD adapter just so I could listen to his album, 'Beautiful World'. So the positive feedback from my childhood idol is extra validation that I'm more versatile than people know. Now, it's time to quit playing games and prove why I deserve a place in the finals."
15 "When I started this journey, I had no idea how much this competition would change me as an artist. It's allowed me to take risks I would have normally never dreamed of. In my career, I've definitely had a lot of almost moments. I almost got this or almost did that. A lot of things didn't turn out the way I planned. And it was oftentimes heartbreaking. Despite this industry's ups and downs, I've only grown a thicker shell because performing is what I'm meant to do. Coming back to this stage is proof of my resilience. I'm so happy that I showed up and did this, because now, it's made me a better performer. I've entered the next phase of my life with the new Mrs. Turtle. And I want to show my future turtles that no matter how many almost moments you have, if you're doing what you love, you have to keep going until you get the win. And that's exactly what I'm doing tonight."
