California Roll is a masked celebrity group contestant on the ninth US season of The Masked Singer.
Appearance
All of the rolls are round rolls of sushi that have huge clumps of white and light gray rice and arms. They have dark green pants made out of the nori that wraps around their bodies. The differences are:
- The roll played by Matt has a red face made out of crab, a toothless grin and a pair of swirly eyes that resemble narutomaki. He has hair and a beard made of seaweed.
- The roll played by Kirstin has a green face, seemingly made of avocado, with salmon for hair, and around it seems to be egg. Her face has two roe for eyes on a smaller egg, and a narutomaki for a mouth.
- The roll played by Kevin has roe around his green face (either made up from wasabi or avocado) and has crab as eyes and a smirk.
- The roll played by Mitch has three huge chunks of crab with no eyes but a big smile with green lips. The upper half is made out of seaweed.
- The roll played by Scott has roe all over his face and has green eyes and crab that resembles a mouth.

3 | Roll #5: "Wasabi, my dudes, I'm the California Roll! You might be wondering what a Cali Roll is doing here on New York night. Well, why not. I've already been on Broadway." Roll #2: "And that wasn’t the only role I played. Oh no, this entrée has many sides. Let me tell you five reasons why I'm the perfect dish." Roll #3: "I'm a scholar with a degree from an Ivy League school! Yeah!" Roll #4: "Just like the city of New York, this Cali Roll never sleeps. I got used to it from DJing all night long. Gotta pay the rent. Heh heh!" Roll #5: "But eventually, California was calling. So, I set out west, on the 10, for the gleeful rays and silver screens." Roll #2: "Once I got there, I was rubbing shoulders with the greats. From Dolly to Snoop." Roll #1: "I even got married! It's been such a busy ride; I barely have time for myself." Roll #2: "But without each of these ingredients, I wouldn't be the successful #1 roll I am today. Sock it to me, dudes!" |
12 | “This is such a different experience than we have ever done. How many people can say they dressed up as sushi and sang Lady Gaga on television? It really is just about our voice and the singing. And trying to push ourselves where we can’t use the foundation of what we know. Which is exciting, because we get to expand into new territories, new sounds, new heights. So tonight, we’re taking it up a notch and hopefully it will take us to the semi-finals.” |
13 | “I think I speak for all of us that it’s really exciting to be here in the semi-finals. Because we love a little friendly competition, and it’s really nice to flex that creative muscle right now. It’s definitely a full-circle moment. While we were rehearsing and filming, I felt like we were having flashbacks to the first time we performed together. I’m even having some of the same anxiety as before. I remember being so nervous I literally was backstage for ‘Uptown Girl’ just singing it over and over. I was like, am I 19 again? But it’s making us realize how far we’ve come as a group. And as musicians individually. And I think we’re really stretching ourselves creatively. One of the things I love about what we’re doing is we’ve really taken the reins of the creative process. We make it something very much us, but present it to the world as something innovative and creative. Hopefully that will impress the judges and audience and take us to the final round.” |
